Using EMDR Therapy to Treat Body Image Issues
When people think about body image concerns, they often assume the problem is simply low self esteem or dissatisfaction with appearance. In reality, body image is often about much more than what we see in the mirror.
Many of the people I work with know logically that they shouldn’t be as hard on themselves as they are.
They’ve read the books, repeated the affirmations, and tried to challenge negative thoughts. Yet they still feel ashamed, self-conscious, or never quite “good enough” when it comes to their appearance.
That’s because body image struggles are often rooted in experiences that go much deeper than the body itself.
As an EMDR therapist, I’ve found that many body image concerns can be traced back to painful experiences that shaped the way someone sees themselves. This might be years of bullying, criticism from family members, comments about weight or appearance, unhealthy relationship experiences, social rejection, or even trauma.
Over time, these experiences can create deeply held beliefs such as:
“I am unattractive.”
“I am not enough.”
“I don’t measure up.”
“My worth depends on how I look.”
Even when those experiences are long in the past, the emotional impact can remain.
How EMDR Helps Heal Body Image Struggles
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapy helps people process these experiences so they no longer carry the same emotional weight. Instead of only focusing on changing thoughts, EMDR helps the brain heal the experiences that created those thoughts in the first place.
For example, I recently worked with a woman who became anxious anytime she saw photos of herself. She avoided being in pictures and constantly compared herself to others. As we explored her history, we discovered that years of teasing and criticism about her appearance had shaped the way she viewed herself.
Through EMDR, she was able to process those experiences and see them from a new perspective. The goal wasn’t to convince her that she looked different. The goal was to help her stop seeing herself through the lens of old wounds.
As treatment progressed, she reported less anxiety, less self-criticism, and more confidence in everyday situations. Most importantly, she spent far less time thinking about her appearance altogether.
That’s often what healing looks like.
What Body Image Recovery Actually Looks Like
Body image recovery isn’t necessarily about loving every part of your body every day. It’s about no longer allowing shame, criticism, or past experiences to determine your worth.
If you’ve spent years feeling stuck in negative thoughts about your appearance, EMDR may help you address the deeper experiences that continue to fuel those beliefs. Healing is possible, and it often begins by recognizing that the problem was never really your body in the first place.
