A New Space to Heal - Chronicling Our Recent Office Move
Welcome to the Mangrove Therapy Group blog! Every month, we write original articles on a variety of topics pertaining to our interests and areas of specialization. Our practice specializes in the treatment of trauma and addiction (which are often interrelated!), so it should be no surprise that our blogs usually focus on some aspect of these conditions. In addition, we are known in Delray Beach and in the greater Palm Beach County area to be experts in the use of EMDR Therapy to treat trauma and a variety of related psychological issues. Therefore, we have a ton of original blogs on EMDR!
This blog is a bit different and will highlight our journey to our new office space, which we moved to in February of this year. Let’s go!
Why Did We Move?
Mangrove Therapy Group has been operating since 2022 out of a nice office building in East Delray Beach on Linton Blvd, which is in the southern part of Palm Beach County. We have clients from all over the area, some traveling all the way up from Miami (over an hour!) to come see us, but most of our clients come from surrounding cities such as Delray Beach, Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Lake Worth Beach, and West Palm Beach.
As our practice continued to increase in size, we started to outgrow the space and therefore needed more therapy rooms, a better waiting area, and more parking. It was a bit of a bummer because our building was in a great location in Delray Beach with quick access to I-95 and surrounded by many great shops and restaurants. Unfortunately, we had to move.
The Search
So Ashley and I (both Mangrove co-founders) started looking for a new space. At first, we were determined to purchase an office suite, and we had an amazing real estate agent who was very well-versed in commercial real estate. Here is a picture with Charlotte Barron of Beachfront Realty and me.
We checked out a variety of places, even venturing into Boynton Beach and Boca Raton (the two surrounding cities), but we ultimately couldn’t find anything. Plus, the commercial real estate market in East Delray Beach is pretty tight inventory-wise, unless you want to buy an entire building for 5+ million bucks. We definitely don’t roll like that! So then we looked for leased spots.
We came across an office space still in East Delray Beach, which was our preference, just a couple of miles down the road. It had everything we needed. Lots of parking, a great waiting area with a reception desk, five therapy offices, and even a small kitchen/breakroom. So we grabbed it!
The Office Build-Out
The space itself was very plain and drab-looking, but that didn’t stop us.
We had a vision of how to make the space warm and inviting, evoking a sense of peace and tranquility. We wanted wood and brick elements, blue doors (I’ve always liked blue doors – they remind me of a Greek villa), and a wood floor.
And we also wanted to add some practice features to help in the practice of psychotherapy, mainly soundproofing. Soundproofing is very important for confidentiality, which is a core element of effective psychotherapy. Let’s face it - no one is going to open up to you and be vulnerable if you can hear through the walls or doors. At the same time, even if you can’t make out what people are saying, it’s very distracting to hear the muffled voices coming from adjacent rooms. So we invested significant resources in making our offices as soundproofed as possible. This entailed insulating the walls in each therapy office, adding mass-loaded vinyl sheets in the walls for extra sound dampening, and using solid-core doors. Mass-loaded vinyl is basically a sheet of heavy vinyl that is placed behind the drywall and on top of the studs, and is very effective at soundproofing.
To help reduce construction costs, we decided to do some of the construction work ourselves. Mainly, cosmetic elements such as wood paneling and brick veneer. Our last office had accent walls using large cardboard sheets with wood images. Well, we were definitely not going to use fake pictures of brick in our new space. I knew we had to use real brick.
So we purchased the supplies, assembled the tools, and got to work!
Some of the offices got wood acoustic wall panels, which give a beautiful look and add to the soundproofing. Some offices got flat reclaimed pine boards, which give the space a nice, rustic, and warm vibe.
Our breakroom got a handmade board and batten wall using mostly 1”x4” boards with some 1"x2" pieces on top, which all got painted Mindful Grey by Sherwin-Williams.
And some of the walls got brick. White Koni Old Chicago Brick.
And after a TON of hard work (and money), we transformed our space!
Honestly, the hardest part was the brick. We used a metal grid system that was bolted to the wall to ensure even lines. Then we used construction adhesive to apply the bricks, one by one. And then we had to apply the grout using piping bags and shaping the mortar once it started to dry.
Ashley had a painting crew that painted the entire space with the colors we chose from Sherwin-Williams. We chose Greek Villa for the walls, Santorini Blue for the doors, Mindful Gray for the breakroom board and batten walls, and Iron Ore for the window frames.
New blinds were installed by 3 Day Blinds. Standard White 1.5" blinds, so no picture needed for this.
And then we hired a muralist, Rachel Vanatta, based out of Jupiter, who transformed our hallway walls into an amazing tapestry of tropical plant life. Ashley was a bit worried it was going to look too busy, like the Rainforest Café, but I reassured her it would look amazing. And it did!
The Move
We scheduled our move on a Saturday, and the whole team, along with some family, was present to make sure it went smoothly. We used Two Men and a Truck, which did a great job (wow, moving must be a hard profession!).
We added the finishing touches. Wall décor. Plants (lots of them). The Mangrove mosaic I made the year before. Some custom neon signs. New furniture. A new scent diffuser to make sure the place smells amazing. Sound machines for privacy. And the transformation was complete.
I was going to include some pictures of our plants, but honestly, there were too many. We actually have 53 live plants in our office… Are we obsessed? Plants allow for a very warm, soothing environment. Check out this blog that I wrote a long time ago on plant therapy.
Here is a picture of our neon EMDR sign, which pays homage to our expertise in EMDR therapy.
