Local Holiday Events for People in Early Recovery (2024)
Are you in early recovery from an addiction, eating disorder, or mental health concern? Did you come to South Florida for treatment, stick around the area, and worried about being lonely or vulnerable during the holidays? Are you worried about how the holidays may put you at greater risk for relapse?
The holiday season can be especially challenging for people in early recovery.
Being newly clean and sober for anyone is already challenging to navigate. This often involves dealing with triggers, fears of the future, shame about the past, and many other new and powerful emotions. Thousands of people fly into the South Florida area every year to participate in treatment programs. Many of them stick around the area to continue their recovery efforts while staying at a local recovery residence.
Our psychotherapy practice, Mangrove Therapy Group, is located in Delray Beach, FL, and specializes in the treatment of addiction and trauma. We know how difficult the holidays can be for many of our clients and associates, placing them at a greater risk for relapse.
That’s why it’s crucial to seek support from others who understand what you’re going through and can help you through this delicate period.
Getting involved in local recovery-related events and activities provides both structure and connection during this time. Many communities in South Florida offer holiday events designed specifically for people in recovery, from sober holiday parties to group outings and support meetings. These gatherings offer a safe space to celebrate and connect without the pressures or temptations that often accompany typical holiday parties. They are a great opportunity to see for yourself that it is definitely possible to have fun in sobriety!
Our area of Delray Beach and the greater Palm Beach County is considered by many to be the recovery capital of the world!
Below is a list of recovery-related holiday activities that are taking place in our area for the holidays. This is not an exhaustive list of course, and there are likely many other amazing events that are being held. But we encourage you to put yourself out there and participate! You may be telling yourself, “But I won’t know anyone there” or “It will be so awkward to show up by myself” or “I’m too afraid!”. We assure you, this will not be the case. People in the rooms of AA, NA, and many other 12-step fellowships will welcome you with open arms and help you through this time period. Unfortunately, there is no way around these facts. Recovery will require you to get uncomfortable, face your fears, and ask for help. As we’ve heard people say, “closed mouths don’t get fed!”.
