Using EMDR To Treat Complex PTSD (CPTSD)
When "Small" Trauma Has a Big Impact
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is getting a lot of well-deserved attention these days. It seems everyone is speaking about how this modality helped them to overcome trauma, and we are so happy to see it!
However, sometimes as a clinician, I worry that people write off smaller traumas, thinking that they aren’t important enough to require therapy or cannot be treated with EMDR. That couldn’t be further from the truth.
I want to speak briefly about what “small” trauma is, how it impacts individuals, and how EMDR can be highly effective in treating it.
If you’ve ever felt like your reactions don’t quite match the situation, or like certain patterns keep repeating in your life, no matter how much insight you have, you’re not alone.
What Is Complex PTSD - And Why It Often Goes Unrecognized
For many people, this is the impact of complex PTSD, or CPTSD.
CPTSD isn’t usually caused by one major event. More often, it comes from repeated experiences over time, especially in relationships where you didn’t feel fully safe, seen, or supported. These moments can be subtle, but they add up. And over time, they can shape the way you see yourself and the world around you.
You might notice beliefs like “I’m not enough,” “I don’t matter,” or “People always leave.” You might feel anxious in relationships, shut down emotionally, or be incredibly hard on yourself without fully understanding why.
How EMDR Therapy Works Differently
EMDR is a type of therapy that helps your brain process those experiences in a deeper way.
Instead of just talking about what happened, EMDR helps your brain “unstick” memories that are still carrying emotional weight. It uses guided eye movements or other forms of gentle, back-and-forth stimulation to help your brain do something it’s naturally wired to do—process and resolve difficult experiences.
When those experiences finally get processed, they don’t feel as intense anymore. They start to feel like something that happened in the past, instead of something you’re still living in.
With CPTSD, we’re often not working with one big memory. We’re working with patterns.
Maybe it’s the feeling of being overlooked. Maybe it’s the fear of being left. Maybe it’s the pressure to be perfect. EMDR helps us gently trace those patterns back to earlier experiences and process them in a way that creates real, lasting change.
Over time, people often notice that their triggers feel less intense. Relationships start to feel safer. And the way they talk to themselves becomes more compassionate and supportive. You don’t forget what happened, but it no longer defines you in the same way. And that’s where real healing begins.
